Job Description
Job Overview
We are looking for a caring person to work with our 28 year old son, who has moderate autism. He is a personable young man, who likes people, and people tend to like him, but he needs help to improve his social skills. He communicates by talking, but needs encouragement to improve his language skills.
He is not aggressive, and does not need assistance with self-help skills (he can feed, dress, toilet, and shower himself without assistance.) He lives in a very nice assisted living community for the disabled in Waxahachie, Texas, where his basic needs are met.
We are looking for someone to work with our son about 2-3 hours every Saturday afternoon, and about 2-3 hours every Sunday afternoon, with one weekend off each month. We will work around your schedule on major holidays and as otherwise necessary.
The person who is hired for this position will engage in a variety of activities with our son, which may include some or all of the following, depending on the skills of the person hired. These activities will take place at the assisted living community where our son lives (except for taking him to the coffee shop).
• Going on walks with him
• Doing arts and crafts with him
• Playing ping pong with him
• Doing language arts and math worksheets with him (3rd grade level)
• Taking him to a nearby coffee shop
We need someone who has reliable transportation, and who can transport our son in their vehicle into the community. This is a contract position, and the person hired will be working as an independent contractor, not an employee. It would be best if the person hired lives in, or close to, Waxahachie. The job will begin when we find the right person for the job, and will last indefinitely.
We would prefer (but do not require) someone who has education, training, and/or experience in one or more of the following fields, but no certification or specific education is necessary:
• Special Education
• Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) or other Behavior Therapy
• Speech Therapy
• Occupational Therapy
• Music Therapy
• Recreation Therapy or Activity Therapy
• Job Coaching
• Autism or other Intellectual Developmental Disability (IDD)
• Social Work
• Psychology
Pay: $20.00 per hour
