Your Role as a Special Education Teacher
• Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies - Activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
• Develop and implement lesson plans - Fulfills the requirements of New Story Schools curriculum program and shows written evidence of preparation as required.
• Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff - Develop, supervise, and implement the IEP process for each student assigned.
• Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits - By grading and providing feedback to students' work.
• Understand and implement supported behavioral interventions.
• Evaluate the current strategies and interventions for referred students - Modify or develop appropriate behavior and/or educational interventions and strategies using information from the IEP, Functional Behavior Assessment, direct observation, school input, and other sources.
• Create a classroom environment conducive to learning - Appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree required.
• Flexible, positive attitude toward students with disabilities.
• Competency with a variety of instructional strategies for individualized learning and behavioral intervention strategies.
• Knowledge of research-based interventions for students with autism spectrum disorder including structured teaching, applied behavior analysis (ABA), and relationship-based interventions.
