The successful candidate will join a growing research program focused on understanding how mosquitoes use their sensory systems to drive behaviors relevant to disease transmission, with the long-term goal of developing innovative strategies to reduce mosquito-borne diseases. Half of the world's population is at risk for mosquito-borne diseases, and mosquitoes rely heavily on their sensory systems to locate hosts, mates, egg-laying sites, and sugar sources. The Raji Lab exploits this dependence to uncover the genetic, neural, and molecular mechanisms underlying mosquito behavior, particularly in Anopheles disease vectors. The laboratory's research program aims to develop new genetic tools to study the neurobiology of mosquito behavior and identify genes and neural circuits that drive blood-feeding and other appetitive behaviors in malaria mosquitoes. To achieve these goals, the lab uses CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing, transcriptomics, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, RNA in situ hybridization, functional imaging, and behavioral assays. A Bachelor's degree ( in Biology, Neuroscience, Genetics, Molecular Biology, Entomology, or a related field) and less than a year of relevant work experience are required. A Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant work experience are preferred. A combination of education and work experience will be considered in lieu of one another. Additional required qualifications include:
Prior laboratory experience (course-based or research-based) in biological sciences Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team-oriented research environment Excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic Additional preferred qualifications include: Previous experience with molecular biology, genetics, or neurobiology techniques Experience working with insects or animal models Familiarity with imaging, behavioral assays, or transcriptomic approaches Interest in vector biology, neuroscience, or global health research What You Will Do Assist with routine and advanced laboratory experiments related to mosquito neurogenetics and behavior Maintain and manage mosquito colonies, including feeding, breeding, and environmental monitoring Perform molecular biology techniques (e.g., DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, cloning, genotyping) Assist with CRISPR-Cas9-based gene editing workflows Support behavioral assays, imaging experiments, and neuroanatomical studies Prepare reagents, maintain lab inventories, and assist with ordering supplies Maintain accurate and organized laboratory records and experimental documentation Assist with data collection, basic analysis, and figure preparation Support training of undergraduate researchers when appropriate Perform all other duties as assigned to support Baylor's mission Ability to comply with university policies Maintain regular and punctual attendance A complete application should include: Curriculum vitae (CV) or résumé Cover letter describing research interests, relevant experience, and career goals Contact information for 2-3 professional references What You Can Expect As part of the Baylor family, eligible employees receive a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, generous time off, tuition remission, and outstanding automatic retirement contributions.
