Arizona Clinical Trials Report — July 2026

Arizona residents considering a clinical trial should check closing dates now: 85 recruiting studies are projected to close within the next 90 days, including 19 that accept healthy volunteers. Enrollment projections can change, but screening often takes time, so people who may qualify should contact study teams promptly.

Across the state, 1,696 trials are currently recruiting at 1,107 research sites in 43 cities. Arizona added 29 new studies in July, down from 38 in May. The monthly total has moved from 47 new trials in February to 29 in July, suggesting a smaller opening pipeline even as the overall number of recruiting opportunities remains substantial.

Closing studies create the most immediate opportunity

The closing-soon group spans both treatment and participation-focused research. Heart failure, healthy participants, malignant solid neoplasms, prostate cancer, major depressive disorder, atopic dermatitis, autism spectrum disorder, and mental health wellness each appear in 2 studies approaching their projected enrollment deadline. Advanced solid tumors and anatomic stage I breast cancer each appear in 1 closing study.

Healthy adults have two kinds of opportunities to consider: the 19 closing-soon studies that accept healthy volunteers and the broader pool of 146 healthy-volunteer trials recruiting statewide. Of July’s 29 new trials, 7 accept healthy volunteers. Anyone interested should verify whether a study needs people with a particular age, sex, medication history, or health profile before applying.

July’s new studies range from sleep apnea to cancer and aging

New research opened across a wide set of conditions. The listed areas include adults with overweight or obesity and type 2 diabetes, advanced or metastatic solid tumors, aging and aging well, acute myeloid leukemia, back pain, bladder cancer, blood-pressure measurement in pregnancy, cancer survivorship, and caregiver burden.

Drug studies were the largest category, with 13 new trials. Other study types included 6 classified as other, 5 device studies, 4 behavioral studies, 3 biological studies, 2 procedures, 1 diagnostic test, and 1 genetic study. This gives prospective participants choices beyond medication trials, including devices, behavioral programs, diagnostic approaches, and procedures.

Several new studies stand out because of their phase, scale, or sponsor:

• NCT07679282 — a Phase 4, 2,400-participant comparative effectiveness study of positive airway pressure, a dental device, and atomoxetine-oxybutynin for obstructive sleep apnea in adults. Researchers will compare effectiveness and how consistently participants can use each treatment.
• NCT07734649 — Sanofi’s Phase 1/2 RSV and human metapneumovirus vaccine-candidate study for adults age 60 and older. The randomized, observer-blind, active- and placebo-controlled study plans to enroll 2,400 participants and will examine immune response and safety.
• NCT07700979 — Akeso’s Phase 3 study of cadonilimab plus chemotherapy versus chemotherapy with or without nivolumab for previously untreated, unresectable, or metastatic HER2-negative gastric or gastroesophageal-junction adenocarcinoma. Planned enrollment is 900 participants.
• NCT07684820 — Expedition Therapeutics’ Phase 2 COPD study comparing EXPD-101/FXS7553 with placebo over 52 weeks. Participants will be randomized to receive one of two study-drug doses or placebo once daily.
• NCT07728188 — AbbVie’s Phase 3 study evaluating injected etentamig plus oral pomalidomide against standard therapies in adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. The study plans to enroll 520 participants.
• NCT07714252 — a VA Office of Research and Development study of a virtual nurse and social-worker palliative-care team for Veterans with heart failure or COPD, with planned enrollment of 420.

Arizona State University is also sponsoring NCT07727746, the Fruit and Vegetable Study pilot. With planned enrollment of 880, it examines how schools and grocery stores can work together to promote fruit and vegetable consumption and support healthier eating among children and families. NCT07696338, “Rethinking Early Airway Clearance Therapies,” includes two randomized studies involving hypertonic saline and dornase alfa for people with cystic fibrosis.

Phoenix and Tucson lead, with opportunities across the state

New trial activity is concentrated in Arizona’s largest research centers, especially the Phoenix metropolitan area and Tucson. Phoenix opened 9 new trials, Tucson 7, and Scottsdale 6. Gilbert added 4, while Chandler recorded 2. Queen Creek, Sun City, and Flagstaff each added 1.

The pattern shows a strong metropolitan concentration, with Phoenix, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Chandler, and Queen Creek together accounting for most of the reported new-city activity. Tucson remains a major research hub, while Flagstaff and Sun City show that opportunities also extend beyond the two largest centers. People should search by city and travel distance because a trial with a large national enrollment may have only one participating Arizona site.

Who may find a match this month?

Older adults are particularly visible in July’s new research: 25 new trials include older adults in their eligibility criteria. The Sanofi vaccine study specifically targets adults age 60 and older. Four new trials include children, while 1 is female-only and 1 is male-only.

Patients and families affected by cancer may find several new options, including studies of advanced or metastatic solid tumors, bladder cancer, acute myeloid leukemia, and multiple myeloma. People with COPD, cystic fibrosis, obstructive sleep apnea, back pain, or type 2 diabetes with overweight or obesity may also find relevant openings. University and health-system sponsors are active in the state. The University of Arizona opened 3 new trials, Mayo Clinic 2, and BTL Industries Ltd. 2. Arizona State University, Banner Health, Caris Science, Carl Zeiss Meditec-Dublin, and Expedition Therapeutics each sponsored 1 listed new study. Overall, 16 new trials were industry-sponsored, 11 classified as other, 1 federally sponsored, and 1 network-sponsored.
