Utah residents considering a clinical trial should act now if they match a study scheduled to close within the next 90 days. There are 59 recruiting trials approaching closure, including studies for heart failure, advanced solid tumors, hypertension, asthma, atrial arrhythmia, leukemia, and other serious conditions. Five of these closing studies accept healthy volunteers, creating a limited window for people without a diagnosed condition.

Utah has 1,201 recruiting trials across 44 cities and 512 research sites. The state added 22 new trials in July, down from 30 in June and 28 in May. Although the monthly flow has slowed from the spring and early summer, the range of opportunities remains broad, with major Phase 3 drug studies, University of Utah research, cancer trials, vaccine research, and studies open to healthy adults.

Closing trials require quick screening

People with heart or blood-pressure conditions may face the most immediate need to inquire. Heart failure, hypertension, advanced solid tumors, and solid tumors each account for 2 closing-soon trials. Other conditions represented among the studies nearing closure include asthma, atrial arrhythmia, an ARID1A gene mutation, B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, total hip replacement, and bipolar disorder I or II with a major depressive episode.

Projected closing dates can change, but screening itself may take time. Healthy adults have 102 recruiting studies available statewide overall, yet only 5 of the trials closing within 90 days specifically accept healthy volunteers.

July brings large Phase 3 studies and a slower opening pace

July’s 22 new trials represent a decline from the recent high of 33 in March, 29 in April, 28 in May, and 30 in June. The monthly trend also shows 9 trials listed for August, suggesting that the number of newly recorded studies may remain uneven as the year progresses.

Drug studies were the most common new-trial category, with 10 openings. Behavioral studies followed with 4, while other research types included three studies classified as other, two biological studies, two device studies, and one dietary-supplement study. The new conditions span obesity and type 2 diabetes, allergic reaction, aphasia, atrophy, cancer, cancer survivorship, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, implicit bias, and COVID-19 vaccines.

Several large, late-stage studies stand out for participants seeking investigational drug research. Amgen’s Phase 3 MARITIME-1-EXTENSION study, NCT07684235, plans to enroll 3,200 people with obesity or overweight. It evaluates the long-term efficacy, safety, and tolerability of maridebart cafraglutide and extends an earlier trial.

Salt Lake City dominates, but opportunities reach five other cities

New-trial activity is strongly concentrated along the Wasatch Front. Salt Lake City accounted for 18 of the 22 July openings. Bountiful, Murray, Provo, St. George, and West Valley City each added one new trial.

Healthy volunteers, families, and older adults

Healthy adults have 6 new trial options in July, while 102 healthy-volunteer studies are recruiting statewide in total. These opportunities may involve behavioral research, vaccines, devices, or other interventions rather than treatment for an existing disease. Because five healthy-volunteer studies are nearing closure, people interested in participating should check eligibility immediately.

July’s new studies include 3 trials that include children. No new trial was listed as female-only, and 1 was male-only. Older adults are included in the eligibility criteria for 19 new trials, making age-inclusive research one of the month’s clearest participation pathways.

Industry sponsors account for 11 of the new trials, while another 11 are classified as other, including academic and institutional research. The mix gives Utah participants access to both major pharmaceutical studies and locally based University of Utah projects.
