Indiana residents considering a clinical trial should check eligibility soon: 65 recruiting studies are expected to close within the next 90 days, including 16 that accept healthy volunteers. Screening can take time, and projected closing dates may change, so people who match a study should contact its research site now rather than wait.

Indiana currently has 1,202 recruiting trials across 58 cities and 738 research sites. July brought 13 new studies, a substantial decline from 26 in May and 30 in March. The monthly count has moved from 34 in February to 30 in March, 21 in April, 30 in May, 26 in June, and 13 in July; the available August figure is 6. Even with fewer openings this month, the statewide research base remains broad.

Closing studies create a short window for patients and healthy volunteers

The conditions most represented among Indiana trials nearing closure are prostate cancer and cancer, with additional opportunities in cystic fibrosis, atopic dermatitis, pain, and cholestatic liver disease. Studies also address amputation-related wounds, traumatic or surgical amputation, alcohol use disorder, and atrial arrhythmia.

Healthy adults have 16 closing-soon options, while 123 healthy-volunteer trials are recruiting statewide overall. Because only 2 of July’s 13 new studies accept healthy volunteers, people without a diagnosed condition may find the closing studies especially relevant. Prospective participants should confirm that a site is still enrolling and ask about screening requirements, visit frequency, compensation, and travel before making arrangements.

July’s new pipeline favors dental, heart, lung, and metabolic research

Indiana’s new studies cover gingivitis, cardiovascular and heart diseases, COPD, cystic fibrosis, dental implants, dental plaque, diabetes, and diabetic foot ulcers. Gingivitis was the only condition appearing in more than one new study, with 2 trials. The mix is more focused than Indiana’s broader recruiting portfolio and includes both treatment studies and research involving devices, behavioral approaches, and other interventions.

Drug studies led the month with 6 new trials, followed by 5 device studies. Four were classified as other and one as behavioral. Industry sponsors opened 7 studies, while 5 were classified as other and 1 as network-sponsored. Sponsors represented in the new-trial data include Novo Nordisk, Pfizer, Maze Therapeutics, Expedition Therapeutics, HALEON, Edwards Lifesciences, Indiana University, Capsicure, LLC, and RTI International.

Major-sponsor Phase 2 and Phase 3 opportunities

Several July openings stand out because of their development phase, sponsor, or potential reach. Novo Nordisk’s Phase 3 AMAZE 9 study, NCT07720271, plans to enroll 950 people with excess body weight. Participants take a daily tablet containing either zenagamtide or placebo. The study is designed to evaluate safety and effectiveness for weight loss and may attract adults seeking an investigational oral treatment option.

Expedition Therapeutics is sponsoring NCT07684820, a Phase 2 COPD study enrolling 600 participants. The trial compares two doses of EXPD-101/FXS7553 with placebo over 52 weeks, examining efficacy, safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics. People with COPD should review the eligibility criteria promptly, particularly if they live within practical distance of an enrolling site.

The new cystic fibrosis research is notable because it examines airway-clearance strategies in a period when highly effective modulator therapies have improved outcomes for many patients. The court-navigation project adds a behavioral and implementation focus to Indiana’s July portfolio, while the Pfizer and Maze studies offer opportunities in alopecia areata and PKU, conditions for which eligible patients may have fewer recruiting choices.

Indianapolis dominates new openings, with options beyond the capital

New-trial activity is concentrated in central Indiana. Indianapolis recorded 9 of July’s 13 openings, making it the primary access point for newly launched research. Carmel and Fort Wayne each added 2, while South Bend added 1.

This pattern suggests that July’s new opportunities cluster around Indianapolis and nearby metropolitan medical centers rather than being evenly distributed throughout the state. However, Indiana’s overall network spans 58 cities and 738 research sites, so people should search the full state by condition and travel distance. A trial with a national enrollment target may have only selected Indiana locations, and the nearest site may not be in the city where the study was first identified.

Families, older adults, and condition-matched patients should review eligibility

Three of the new trials include children, and 11 include older adults. One study is male-only, while none of the new openings are female-only. The pediatric eligibility may be relevant to families looking at cystic fibrosis or other age-specific research, while the broad older-adult representation may help people who are often excluded from early research opportunities.

Healthy volunteers remain an important group to watch: 2 new studies accept healthy participants, and 16 closing-soon studies do as well. Patients with prostate cancer, cystic fibrosis, atopic dermatitis, pain, cholestatic liver disease, or alcohol use disorder should act quickly because these conditions appear repeatedly among studies approaching closure. Adults with COPD, excess body weight, PKU, or moderate alopecia areata may instead find the strongest immediate opportunities among the newly opened Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies.

Indiana’s trial landscape is likely to keep shifting as summer recruitment continues. Checking newly posted sites, contacting coordinators early, and expanding the search beyond Indianapolis can give eligible patients and volunteers more time to complete screening before enrollment windows narrow.
