Richmond, VA Clinical Trials Report — July 2026

Richmond residents who may qualify for a clinical trial should act now if their condition appears among the 34 studies expected to close within the next 90 days. Five of those studies accept healthy volunteers. Richmond currently has 597 recruiting trials across 211 research facilities, but enrollment can end before a listed closing date if study targets are reached.

July brought 10 new trials, down slightly from 11 in June and May’s 11. The city remains one of Virginia’s strongest clinical research centers, led by Virginia Commonwealth University and its cancer programs.

Closing windows for Richmond participants

The conditions most represented among trials closing soon include heart failure, with two studies. Five closing-soon studies accept healthy volunteers, while 47 healthy-volunteer trials are recruiting in Richmond overall. People without a diagnosed condition should check these opportunities promptly, particularly because none of the 10 trials opened in July accepts healthy volunteers.

Major new studies include Phase 3 drug research

July’s new-trial mix includes five drug studies, two classified as other, one device study, and one dietary-supplement study. Nine of the new trials include older adults, and one includes children. There are no female-only or male-only openings in the month’s data.

• Novo Nordisk A/S is sponsoring NCT07720271, the Phase 3 AMAZE 9 study of once-daily zenagamtide tablets for adults with excess body weight. The trial plans to enroll 950 participants and compares zenagamtide with placebo.
• AbbVie is sponsoring NCT07728188, a Phase 3 study comparing injected etentamig plus oral pomalidomide with standard therapies for adults with relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. Planned enrollment is 520 participants.
• Virginia Commonwealth University sponsors NCT07700225, an extension study examining biomarkers and clinical endpoints in myotonic dystrophy type 1. The study lists planned enrollment of 1,000 participants and focuses on the progressive multisystem effects of DM1.
• NCT07696338, sponsored by Nicole Hamblett, is the REACT study of early airway-clearance therapies in cystic fibrosis. It includes parallel studies of hypertonic saline and dornase alfa and plans to enroll 405 participants.
• Specialty Networks Research. sponsors NCT07686757, a Phase 4 pragmatic study evaluating the real-world effectiveness of inflammatory bowel disease treatments in adults with ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease. Planned enrollment is 400 participants.
• Virginia Commonwealth University sponsors NCT07706192, a study of food assistance and treatment adherence among cancer patients experiencing food insecurity at VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center. The study plans to enroll 350 participants.

Other July openings address B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, cerebral edema, Crohn disease, cystic fibrosis, gastrointestinal conditions, high-risk myelodysplastic syndrome, high-risk myeloproliferative neoplasms, microbiota, and myotonic dystrophy. Virginia Commonwealth University sponsors 4 of the new trials. Virginia Commonwealth University is Richmond’s largest research location, with 150 recruiting trials.
