Washington residents considering a clinical trial should act now if they match a study nearing enrollment closure. 67 recruiting trials are expected to close within the next 90 days, including 13 that accept healthy volunteers. Screening can take time, and projected closing dates may change, so potential participants should contact study teams promptly rather than waiting until the deadline.

At the same time, Washington added 21 new trials in July, down from 43 in June and May’s 43. The state still offers a broad research network: 1,665 trials are recruiting across 67 cities and 795 research sites.

Closing opportunities span cancer, cystic fibrosis, and other serious conditions

The most time-sensitive openings are concentrated in studies for people with difficult-to-treat diseases. Refractory hematologic malignancies, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, hematopoietic and lymphatic system neoplasms, prostate cancer, advanced solid tumors, amputation, cystic fibrosis, and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma each appear among the leading closing-soon categories.

Healthy volunteers have a smaller but especially urgent window. Of the 67 trials closing within 90 days, 13 accept healthy participants. Statewide, 142 recruiting trials list healthy volunteers, but only one of July’s 21 newly opened studies does so. Adults without a diagnosed condition should therefore search the closing-soon list as well as newly opened studies.

July’s new studies are led by Washington institutions and children’s research

New trial activity covered a wide range of conditions, from acute infections and eczema to cancer, alcohol use disorder, aplastic anemias, and autoimmune diseases. The month’s condition list included separate studies for anatomic stage I, II, and III breast cancer, suggesting opportunities for patients at different points in the disease course.

The intervention mix leaned toward medicines: 12 new trials were classified as drug studies. Other interventions accounted for 6, followed by biological studies (4), procedures (3), behavioral studies (2), devices (1), and genetic research (1). This gives prospective participants choices beyond drug treatment, including digital, behavioral, procedural, and genomic research.

University of Washington opened 6 new studies, while Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center opened 3. AstraZeneca and Nader Shaikh sponsored 2 each. Other named sponsors included Dren Bio, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Inmagene LLC, and BrainChild Bio, Inc. By sponsor category, 13 studies were classified as other, 7 as industry-sponsored, and 1 as federally sponsored.

Notable new trials include major Phase 3 cancer studies

Several July openings stand out for their size, study phase, or sponsor. Two Phase 3 studies from AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb may draw particular attention from eligible cancer patients. Their treatment questions involve high-risk muscle-invasive urothelial cancer and EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer, respectively.

Other large studies broaden the choices beyond cancer. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is sponsoring NCT07739706, a study of the QuitQuest smartphone application compared with the National Cancer Institute’s SmokefreeTeenQuitVaping app to help teens stop vaping. University of Washington’s NCT07718971, ISeqU, plans to enroll 1,000 adults to study whether whole-genome sequencing can identify previously unexplained diagnoses and guide care.

People with cystic fibrosis may want to review NCT07696338, “Rethinking Early Airway Clearance Therapies.” The REACT trial includes parallel randomized studies of hypertonic saline and dornase alfa, examining airway-clearance strategies as health outcomes continue to improve with highly effective modulator therapy.

Seattle dominates new activity, with additional options east and south

New trial openings are heavily concentrated in Seattle. The city accounted for 17 of Washington’s 21 new studies, or most of the month’s additions. Spokane followed with 3, while Burien, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and Tacoma each added 1.

The pattern points to a strong Puget Sound and major-medical-center concentration, with a smaller but meaningful presence in Spokane and other communities. Because Washington has recruiting sites in 67 cities overall, people should search by both condition and distance rather than assuming every study is limited to Seattle. Some trials may also involve multiple hospitals or clinics, as with the children’s ear and sinus infection studies.

Children, older adults, and healthy volunteers should check eligibility

Families have new opportunities this month: 5 of the 21 new trials include children. The two Nader Shaikh infection studies and the Fred Hutch vaping study are especially relevant to parents or teens who meet the age and health requirements. One new study is female-only and one is male-only, while 14 new trials include older adults.

Healthy volunteers face a different decision. Only 1 July opening accepts healthy participants, compared with 142 recruiting studies statewide. The 13 healthy-volunteer trials closing within 90 days may offer the most immediate opportunities, but interested adults should confirm eligibility, compensation, visit schedules, and screening requirements directly with each research site.

Washington’s trial pipeline is likely to keep shifting through the remainder of 2026. Patients with cancer, cystic fibrosis, eczema, infections, or unexplained conditions—and healthy adults willing to support research—should continue checking openings in Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma, and nearby communities before projected enrollment deadlines pass.
