Michigan residents considering a clinical trial should act promptly if they match a study nearing enrollment closure: 104 recruiting trials are expected to close within the next 90 days, including 16 that accept healthy volunteers. Michigan has 2,152 recruiting trials across 128 cities and 1,270 research sites, so people may have several options—but screening and scheduling can take time.

Closing opportunities are concentrated in cancer and cardiovascular research

Prostate cancer has the largest group of closing-soon studies, with 4 trials. Other prominent categories include atopic dermatitis, surgery, lung cancer, advanced solid tumors, solid tumors, cancer overall, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, cardiovascular diseases, and head and neck cancer.

Healthy volunteers have a narrower window than patients in many disease-focused studies. Sixteen of the 104 closing-soon trials accept healthy participants, while 168 healthy-volunteer trials are recruiting statewide overall. Anyone interested should review the full eligibility criteria and contact study sites soon; a projected closing date may change, and enrollment can end before the formal deadline.

New recruitment slowed in July, but major studies opened

Michigan added 28 new trials in July, down from 44 in May. The six-month pattern shows a fluctuating pipeline: 51 new trials opened in February, 56 in March, 39 in April, 40 in May, 44 in June, and 28 in July. The data also show 12 trials listed for August, suggesting that recruitment activity may continue to shift quickly.

Drug studies led July’s new openings, with 18 trials. Behavioral studies accounted for 5, as did other study types. Devices represented 4 new trials, biological interventions 3, procedures 2, and diagnostic testing and combination products 1 each.

New research spans weight management, alcohol use disorder, behavioral health, depression, cystic fibrosis, glioblastoma, acute myeloid leukemia, biomarkers, and covert consciousness. Overweight and obesity each appeared in 2 new trials, while the other listed conditions each appeared in 1 new study.

Large Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies offer high-profile options

Several new trials stand out because of their phase, planned enrollment, or sponsor. Amgen’s Phase 3 extension study NCT07684235 plans to enroll 3,200 people with obesity or overweight. It is evaluating the long-term efficacy, safety, and tolerability of maridebart cafraglutide among participants continuing from an earlier study.

Sanofi is sponsoring NCT07734649, a Phase 1/2 study of an RSV and human metapneumovirus vaccine candidate in adults age 60 and older. The multicenter study plans to enroll 2,400 participants and will evaluate immune response and safety. AstraZeneca’s Phase 3 rollover study NCT07691970 plans to enroll 1,072 people who completed a previous anifrolumab study and clinically benefited from continued treatment.

University of Michigan researchers also opened studies with broad potential relevance. NCT07690657, sponsored by the University of Michigan, plans to enroll 5,000 participants to study whether risk-based or benefit-based allocation of transition-of-care interventions can reduce unplanned hospital readmissions or death within 30 days after discharge. NCT07685925, the Intern Health Study 2026, plans to enroll 1,000 medical interns and will test a smartphone intervention designed to improve mood, physical activity, and sleep.

Other new studies include NCT07701161, which is developing a home blood test for p-tau217 using the Tasso Lancet device in people with and without Alzheimer’s disease, and a study sponsored by the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center involving cancer research. Participants should confirm whether a Michigan site is enrolling locally, since the overall planned enrollment for a national or multicenter trial does not indicate how many places are available in the state.

Ann Arbor and Detroit dominate local access

New trial activity is concentrated in Michigan’s largest academic and metropolitan research centers. Ann Arbor leads with 9 new trials, followed by Detroit with 8 and Grand Rapids with 5. Southfield and Flint each added 2. Berkeley, Berkley, Buckley, Livonia, and Owosso each recorded 1 new trial.

The geographic pattern favors southeast Michigan and major university or hospital centers, especially Ann Arbor and Detroit, while Grand Rapids provides a significant western Michigan hub. The presence of new studies in Flint, Livonia, Owosso, Buckley, and other communities shows that opportunities are not limited entirely to the largest metros. People should search by city and condition together, because a trial recruiting statewide may have only one nearby site.

Healthy adults, older adults, and families should check eligibility

Four of the 28 new July trials accept healthy volunteers. There are no female-only new trials and 1 male-only study. Children are included in 2 new trials, while 26 include older adults in their eligibility criteria. The Sanofi vaccine study is especially relevant to adults age 60 and older, although each site will apply its own screening requirements.

Healthy adults should move quickly on the 16 closing trials that accept volunteers, while people interested in obesity, vaccine, behavioral-health, or digital-intervention research may find fresh openings in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids, and other Michigan communities. Through the rest of summer, recruitment may bring new options while shortening the window for current studies.
