Florida Clinical Trials Report — July 2026

Floridians who may qualify for a clinical trial closing soon should begin screening now: 224 recruiting studies are expected to close within the next 90 days, including 50 that accept healthy volunteers. Breast cancer and prostate cancer lead the closing-soon list with 8 trials each. Enrollment dates can change, and screening may take time, so people interested in a study should contact the research site promptly.

Florida remains one of the country’s largest clinical research markets, with 3,861 trials recruiting across 203 cities and 4,609 research sites. The state added 72 new trials in July, fewer than the 108 recorded in June and the 95 opened in May. The monthly total has moved unevenly during 2026, after reaching 120 in March and 100 in April.

Closing trials create the most immediate opportunities

Cancer-related research makes up much of the time-sensitive activity. In addition to breast and prostate cancer, studies nearing closure address cancer more broadly, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer, metastatic solid tumors, colorectal cancer, and advanced solid tumors. Stroke and hepatic impairment each also appear among the leading conditions in closing-soon studies.

Healthy adults should not assume that every opportunity is treatment-related. Fifty of the closing studies accept healthy volunteers, while 437 healthy-volunteer trials are recruiting statewide overall. Of July’s new trials, 18 accept healthy volunteers. That makes healthy participants one of the clearest groups to search now, particularly if they can travel to a research center on short notice.

July’s new research spans weight, infections, cancer, and mental health

The new-trial mix is broad, but several conditions appear repeatedly. Overweight, HIV infections, obesity, schizophrenia, breast cancer, ADHD, healthy volunteers, non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis, relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma, and ankyloglossia each had 2 new trials. The range includes chronic diseases, infectious disease prevention and treatment, psychiatric research, pediatric or family health questions, and studies involving people without a diagnosed condition.

Drug research dominated July, with 39 new drug trials. Devices accounted for 12, followed by other study types (10), biological interventions (8), procedures (3), and behavioral studies (3). Dietary supplements, combination products, and genetic studies each contributed 2 trials, while one diagnostic-test study opened.

Large Phase 2 and Phase 3 studies offer notable options

Several major-sponsor trials opened with substantial planned enrollment. Amgen’s Phase 3 MARITIME-1-EXTENSION study, NCT07684235, will evaluate the long-term efficacy, safety, and tolerability of maridebart cafraglutide in people with obesity or overweight. The extension plans to enroll 3,200 participants and follows an earlier study, making it particularly relevant to eligible participants who completed the parent trial.

Sanofi is sponsoring NCT07734649, a Phase 1/2 study of an RSV and human metapneumovirus vaccine candidate in adults age 60 and older. The multi-center trial plans to include 2,400 participants and will examine immune response and safety. Older adults are represented broadly in Florida’s new research: 59 July trials include older adults in their eligibility criteria.

• NCT07679282 — A Phase 4 comparison of positive airway pressure, a dental device, and atomoxetine-oxybutynin for adults with obstructive sleep apnea, targeting 2,400 participants.
• NCT07728123 — Westat’s Screen2Prevent study, designed to evaluate broad-scale HIV screening approaches in emergency departments, with a planned enrollment of 84,000.

Another new study, NCT07710820, is examining whether access to a heated tobacco product affects cigarette abstinence among current adult cigarette smokers. RAI Services Company is sponsoring the study, which plans to enroll 1,060 participants. This is a study of smoking behavior and product access rather than a treatment trial, so prospective participants should review its specific requirements carefully.

South Florida and major metros lead new-site activity

New trial activity is concentrated in Florida’s largest metropolitan research centers. Miami opened 15 new trials, followed by Tampa with 13 and Orlando with 7. Coral Gables, Hollywood, Fort Myers, and Jacksonville each recorded 5 new trials. Miami Lakes added 4, while Fort Lauderdale and Daytona Beach each had 3.

The city pattern points to strong clustering in South Florida, the Tampa Bay area, and Central Florida, with additional access in Southwest and Northeast Florida. The state’s total of 203 recruiting cities shows that research is not limited to Miami, Tampa, or Orlando, but people outside the major hubs may need to compare several nearby cities or plan for longer travel.

Who should act now?

Parents and families may find options among 18 new trials that include children. Two new studies are female-only, while none are male-only. People age 60 and older should review vaccine and other age-related studies, while healthy adults have both new openings and a substantial statewide pool of recruiting trials.

Florida’s July sponsor mix includes major pharmaceutical companies and local research institutions. H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center and Research Institute, AstraZeneca, Sanofi, and Florida Gulf Coast University each sponsored 3 new trials. AbbVie, the University of Miami, Orlando Health, and BTL Industries each sponsored 2. Industry sponsors accounted for 48 new trials, compared with 23 classified as other and 1 network-sponsored study.

Patients with cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, liver disease, sleep apnea, or respiratory conditions should check both newly opened and closing-soon studies. Healthy volunteers, older adults, parents seeking pediatric opportunities, and current smokers also have identifiable entry points this month. As August approaches, Florida’s large research network will continue shifting, making early eligibility checks the best way to preserve access to studies with limited enrollment windows.
